Do you have a taste for the exotic but can’t afford a world trip? That’s ok. BEMAC & Brisbane Powerhouse are bringing the world to you, and their April program has just been announced.

From Latin to Reggae, Indian to African, Planet, on the first Saturday of every month transports your musical senses literally to another world. With each session you might find Brazilian rhythms crossing paths with Eastern delights or cool island drums coming face to face with the heat of Salsa. Its world music and world class acts, a true globe-trotting experience.

BEMAC (Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre) are Queensland’s lead agency dedicated to identifying, developing, presenting and promoting artists from migrant and refugee backgrounds and world music practitioners. BEMAC present an annual program of world music and multicultural arts in venues and galleries across the state by local, national and international artists.
2012 Is BEMAC’s 25th Anniversary Year!
To celebrate BEMAC will be rolling out a whole host of new programs and events as well as making some exciting additions and changes to their existing ones. Watch this space for announcements and key information.
April Program - Planet
April Planet will transport you to the Persian New Year’s celebration of Nowrooz with four local musical ensembles showcasing fresh and exciting versions of traditional Persian music.
Hezar Ava Ensemble: 5.00pm - 5.20pm
Hezar-Ava ensemble was formed in January 2010 to introduce authentic traditional music of Iran. This ensemble represents Persian classical music infused with beautiful poetry, reflecting on eternal love, spirituality and mysticism taking the listener on a journey to the celestial world. Hezar-Ava ensemble complements this with Iranian folk songs, displaying a variety of distinct styles. Folk songs originate from different parts of Iran and each bears some features associated with native myths, dialects, geographical and social situation.
Sufi Art Group: 5.30pm - 5.50pm
The Sufi Art Group was founded in 2000, by Arash Zanganeh and Leila Honari with the goal of preserving art and culture of the east. The Sufi Art Group believes that the needs of people for art aren’t best classified through thought, class and pleasure. Rather, peoples’ art needs are met through the sublime and through salvation from materialistic life.
Sweet Sounds: 6.00pm - 6.20pm
Be serenaded by the sweet sounds of Shirin Majdteimouri as she shares her culture with you. Accompanied by Behnam Tonekaboni, Katherine Philip and Arash Zangane, enjoy this wistful journey through old Persia.
Pejvak - The Far Seas Melodies: 6.30pm - 7.00pm
Persian music fan favorites, Pejvak will leave you wanting more with their unique and expansive command of a variety of traditional Persin instruments. The band consists of 4 multi-instrumentalists playing persian folk and classical music using everything from the harp, dohole and Tombak to darbuka, kamanche and ghoshme.
PLANET is the Brisbane Powerhouse dedicated world music and dance program. This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
