Falls Music & Arts Festival Line Up Announcement - Arts

The Falls Festival 2011 Arts Programme has been unveiled.

falls-festival

Its fantastical, it’s splendid, it’s wondrous and it’s here. The Falls Festival’s established arts programme is once again out and about, take a look at the acts that’ll delight your senses and knock your socks off simultaneously this December.

The weird and the eternally wonderful The Village returns! It’s the festival within the festival, the party within the party; they’ve got morning yoga sessions, samba classes and circus workshops, followed up with puppetry, burlesque and comedy, as well as a never ending list of the unexpected.

Every few years The Village picks up her afghan tent skirts, packs her party lights and nestles into a fresh pocket of Falls wonderland. She’s at it again this year in Lorne, You’ll find her sprawled under some trees, closer to the main stage – indeed an easy stroll from the action and with plenty of space to accommodate her ever expanding hive of arts delights

Taking us away in The Village for Marion Baythis year is:

Circus ensemble A4 and authentic re-enactors Australia Day 1938: An Opera. French ska 9-piece Babylon Circus will grace the stage with their anti-establishment tunes. Melbourne’s Bad Taste will spread their thrash and funk beats while electronic songwriter Charles Du Canewill surround his growling voice with sample-based productions.

Company Casus blend circus techniques with modern media, whilst Danger Academy mixes improv comedy with battling. Electro-pop outfit Denim Owlmelds warm synthesizers with banging percussion loops. Tasmania’s Dublofeature sassy vocals with dancehall ready rhythms and Karo Taks’ Kijidoos invites audiences into a weird and wonderful world of circus life.

New Orleans blues infused King Cake and high-glam ladies Las Vegas Grind don’t let up until the sun rises and fusing jazz, punk rock and reggae are the Lawless Quartet.

Puppetry takes on a new meaning with Randy whilst Melbourne’s punk rockers to yacht-rockers Sex On Toast perplex and entertain.  Thunderous hot rhythms leap from Tasmania’s Sin & Tonic and Sitar Bass Jump adheres to classical training whilst introducing modern synth sounds. Patrons can learn to align movements from their core by combining relaxation and intention with Tai Ji and bringing their Japanese Festival percussion and beating the biggest drums you’ll ever see is Taiko Drummers.

Witness Romanian pop sounds springing from TGK and dramatic physical comedy with circus troupe The Porcelain Punch Travelling Medicine Show. Casting pop triangles and inventive pop sounds will be Tiger Choir and producing driving ska backbeats to roots music are Trumps. With the latest Baltic and Balkan hits is Vardos and for their first time in Tasmania, washed up circus clowns Wacko & Blotto will be proving their authority as the purveyors of language reversal and violators of taboos.

Joining Arj Barker and Josh Thomas in the comedy arena this year in both Lorne and Marion Bay:

Melbourne’s musical comedy duo Anyone For Tenniswill be rocking matching headbands and jokes to original tunes.  Bringing high-energy storytelling is Harley Breen and political satire is Matthew Keneally. Rounding it all out is funny man Mo Elleissy of Amazing race fame.

Performing in The Village in Lorne this year:

Green Room award nominee Amy Bodssianis ready to blow patron’s minds with her show ‘Graaahm’. Fresh from the main stage, French ska maestros’ Babylon Circus will get their groove on and let their hair out. Christian Bagin will perform his hilarious six minute genius puppet show Bernie and His Amazing Unicorn. Child of the 80’s Biscotti bakes beats from many flavours including dance, electro, roots and reggae. One madman band BJ Morrizonkleis ready to have a picnic in your mind and singing siren songs from the soul will be Brite Fight.

The lovely gals of Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes will make all the single ladies shake it with their 60’s infused jams and Germany’s one-man-band Dad Horse Experience has a banjo in his hands and a message on his tongue for those ready to hear it. Nationwide smut literary hit Erotic Fan Fiction will add a touch of fun to the short story genre and Heel Toe Express - a troupe of singin’, swingin’, pickin’ humans will show everyone how to keep a bitchin’ harmony.

Patrons will be asked to test their mettle at the most sacred art – Karaoke Falls with hits from near and far.  Swiss born and Texan raised Larry Bang Bang uses his tremendous voice and lazy guitar to tell the tales of ancient folk-legends. Larry’s Tattoo Show has painted bodies across the world and is ready to take on Australia. Malcolm Whittaker et al.will take audiences on a journey with his show ‘Beep Test of Imaginary Beings’, and Australia’s first hip-hop choir Massive are bringing their urban jungle to Falls.

Drawing on inspiration from film noir, the Jazz age and Latin America is Mojo Juju and adding a gaudy mix of colour and texture to dance music is Antipodean kid NoZu. Fresh from the Montreal and Vancouver Fringe Festivals is comedic artist Jon Bennet performing Pretending Things Are Cock and local Melbourne act Rat Vs Possum will prove their grit as psychedelic-pop masters.

Rock-comedy at its finest will be demonstrated by Ryan Coffey through his howling vocals and loop pedal. So You Think You Can Interpretive Dance is ready to bust a move, seeing competitors battle it out to classic hits like ‘Kiss from a Rose’ and ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’. Ready to tell you if you’re more a Tim Tam or Barbeque Shape is Betty and Bert Bercher at The Biscuit Readings.Everyone from The Dandy Warhols to Franz Ferdinand has partied with The Suitcase Royale and their 10 minute dance parties, now it’s your turn in Lorne.
